In Memory of Tpr. Shawn W. Snow
From: Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt Issued: 08-15-08
On August 3, 2008, Trooper Shawn W. Snow, Troop B Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (CVEU) a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, lost his life while assisting a motorist in Ogdensburg.
Trooper Snow was inspecting a commercial vehicle at the Ogdensburg International Bridge when a distressed operator of an antique fire truck approached Trooper Snow. The driver stated he had a flat tire and was unable to get the truck elevated to change the tire. Trooper Snow completed his inspection and then assisted the fire truck driver. After many attempts to fix the tire, Trooper Snow took the driver to a local Lowe’s to buy a Cobalt power jack. Upon return, it was decided to extend the fire truck ladder in order to shift the weight and allow the jack better access. Trooper Snow then crawled underneath the vehicle to place the jacks. Unfortunately, either the ladder malfunctioned or the weather conditions caused the ladder to shift, which resulted in the ladder contacting a high voltage wire and fatally electrocuting both Trooper Snow and the fire truck operator.
Trooper Snow was born in Canton, New York, on March 19, 1961. He was the son of E. Edward and Inez (Baxter) Snow. He graduated from Hermon-DeKalb School in 1979. Trooper Snow served in the U.S. Navy from 1979 yo 1985 and then in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1985 to 1989.
Trooper Snow, upon graduating from the SP Academy, was stationed in Troop A, Fredonia, Troop K, Stormville, Troop B SP Gouverneur; and was assigned to Troop B CVEU in May, 2004.
He is survived by his wife Penny (nee Ayen) Snow and two sons Eric and Jamie, step-children Shelby, Heather, and Tony Hughes, his parents, his brothers, Terrance and Dana Snow, his sisters Micaelle Gossi and April Allen and three grandchildren MacKenzie, Nolan and Jacob.
Trooper Snow was always willing to help anyone in need and had a lifelong reputation for his kindness and generosity. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
